Every Known Race and Species in Black Clover including their Powers

Hey guys – I hope you’re all in good health and high spirits! Today, I want to have a little discussion about every known race and species in the popular Japanese Manga series, “Black Clover.” Such races and species include Humans, Elves, and Demons. In recent chapters of the anime series, the creators have introduced many new races into the story. It’s quite possible that we may see even more in the future, but until then, I’ll be explaining all you need to know about the existing races and species – at least the ones we know about.

SPOILER ALERT! This blog contains spoilers from the Manga, so proceed with caution. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

01: HUMANS

First up on the agenda, we have the Humans – by far the most prominent race in the story. When it comes to numbers, the Humans control all of the known nations in the world of Black Clover. It is likely that the sheer size of the Human Race is what led to them achieve domination of the entire Black Clover universe. In general, however, the Humans are not the strongest race. There are various subcategories of the race, some of which are stronger and some of which are weaker. It’s also important to note that along with being the most populous race in Black Clover, the Humans also appear to have access to the most advanced technology. It’s likely that this, combined with their sizeable population, contributed to the Humans’ ability to win domination.

Sub-Categories: Commoners

In terms of sub-categories, let’s begin with the regular Humans, or “Commoners.” Nearly all Commoners have some amount of “Mana” (power of prestige). While the precise amount depends on the individual, Black Clover Humans are rarely born without any Mana at all. Of course, Asta is a prime example, although it’s also important to stress that this is a rare occurrence and not the norm – even among commoners.

The Humans who live in the outermost region of the Black Clover Kingdom are known as the residents of the “Forsaken Realm,” and they tend to be the weakest and poorest members in the Kingdom. However, that’s not to say no powerful Mages emerge from the Forsaken Realm. Yuno is a perfect example of someone who was raised in the Forsaken Realm all his life, but possesses an immense amount of Mana and magic potential.

Sub-Categories: Royal Families

After the Commoners, we have the Royal Families. Now, we know Royal Family members tend to have more mana, AKA, more magic than your average non-Royals. That’s why many Royal Family members become such powerful Mages! Although, thankfully, not all of them consider themselves to be inherently better or more powerful than Commoners, seeing as their royal birth and status prove otherwise.

Royals are generally expected to be highly successful and powerful Mages. Any royal who is born without great magic potential is looked down upon by other Royals, even if they lack sufficient mana, can’t quite control their magic yet, or possess a unique power that is not properly understood. This was the case with Noel and Sakura, Royals who will likely continue to face ridicule from other Royals.

Sub-Categories: The Witches

Another subcategory of humans we must mention is, of course, the Witches. The Witches are female humans who live inside the Witches’ Forest – a grand magical zone nestled within a neutral area between the Clover and Diamond Kingdoms. The Witches’ Forest is governed by the Witch Queen. In the Black Clover universe, Woman are only meant to reside in the Forest when another Witch leaves – just like Vanessa did. She is considered a fugitive, on the run from the Witch Queen.

Technically-speaking, men and non-Witches are prohibited from entering the Witches’ Forest. However, as we know, this didn’t stop Asta or his friends from getting in anyway. The Witches tend to possess a type of magic one would associate with fictional Witches in our own real world, with magic that includes curses and fortune-telling.

Sub-Categories: Freaks of Nature

Finally, we have those Humans whose bodies have been altered through cruel experimentation, like Mars and Fauna. These people had Mage stones implanted into their bodies by the Diamond Kingdom to enhance their magical abilities. Unfortunately, this comes at a price, affecting their personality too.

02: ELVES

Next up, we have the Elves, also known as the “Elf Tribe.” This ancient race lived in the Forsaken Realm of the Clover Kingdom until around 500 years ago. While the Elves closely resemble humans, there are a few fundamental differences – Elves are covered in white hair and have pointy ears. Elves do, however, possess a genetic makeup that’s close enough to that of the Humans to allow an Elf and a Human to procreate. We witnessed a prime example of this when Tetia conceived a half-Human, half-Elf child with Licht, the Elf elder.

In general, Elves possess a lot more magical powers than Humans. However, as mentioned earlier, Humans have access to more advanced technology than Elves, although Elves are believed to be the only creatures capable of using magic stones to their fullest potential. The Elves also have knowledge of ancient and forbidden magic that requires immense amounts of Mana to access and use, such as the creation of a third eye.

Owing to their immense magical abilities, the Elves were once deeply-respected by Humans. In the same breath, many Humans were, and are, fearful of the Elves and jealous of their power. As a result, the devil was able to manipulate the Elves to turn against the Humans on a mission to orchestrate the Elf massacre five centuries before the events of Black Clover. Many of the Elves, including Patri, did not realize that the massacre had been orchestrated by the devil. With no facts to stand by, they blamed the Humans for betraying them.

Aside from their regular forms and the three-eyed appearance, there are several other manifestations that Elves can take on. For example, following the elf massacre, Licht is able to use magic stones to transform himself into a giant demon, also known as the demon God. In this form, Licht becomes a mindless monster hellbent on destruction. Ultimately, he meets his maker at the hands of Lumiere, the first wizard King, although Licht requests him to do so. But – why did Licht turn himself into this monster? Well, he wanted to stop the devil from taking control of his body. He believed that taking on this form and being killed by Lumiere was the only way to stop the devil from manifesting into the Black Clover world.

02: Darkl ELVES

Finally, we have the Dark Elf. Creatures who have been brought back to life through reincarnation magic are stricken with wicked hearts. Their negative emotions are amplified and their personalities are more susceptible to negative feelings like jealousy, despair, and hatred.

Once an Elf has been reincarnated, he becomes fully immersed in (and consumed by) these negative emotions. From there, he or she transforms into a Dark Elf. So far, the only example we’ve seen is Patri, who becomes a Dark Elf after learning the truth about the devil’s manipulation of him and his emotions. In his Dark Elf form, Patri’s skin darkens his light magic becomes demon magic – a dark and sinister alternative.

The whites of his eyes also turned black. In his Dark Elf form, Patri appears hellbent on mindless destruction – completely void of emotion or remorse. This vaguely resembles Licht’s giant demon form. However, in the case of Patri, Austin is able to get through to Patri after his anti-magic allows him to enter Patri’s mind. Following these events, Patri reappears to revert back to his normal form – although his left eye remains black.

Judging from what we’ve seen so far, it’s quite possible that the Elves have even more tricks up their sleeves. Could their knowledge of ancient and forbidden magic one day allow them to take on unknown forms and transformations we are yet to see? Only time will tell.

03: DEMONS AND DEVILS

Now, let’s chat more about the demons or devils. The word “Akuma” translates to either devils or demons, and these creatures appear to be another ancient race holding extreme power and immense magic. Other than Licht’s giant demon form, the only demons we have seen in the series so far are the devil who possessed Ronan and orchestrated the Elf massacre, and the one trapped inside Asta’s Grimoire. Both Akumas appear to share certain physical similarities, such as horns, sharp teeth, and giant dark wings.

We now know that both the devil and Asta’s demon come from another dimension. Somehow, though, they were able to penetrate this world and take over the bodies of other creatures, including Humans and Elves. Demons are also capable of possessing certain objects, like the Five-Leaf Grimoire. It is said that the devil lives within the Fifth Leaf.

We can assume that in order for a demon to move to this dimension from their own, a Five-Leaf Grimoire must be used. Although, we still don’t know anything about the demon world or why the demons would want to travel to this dimension. However, one thing is for sure – the demons possess immense and rare otherworldly powers, including “Kotodama” and anti-magic.

04: DWARFS

We then have the Dwarfs, yet another ancient race that once lived alongside the Humans and Elves. However, the Dwarfs now appear to be nearly extinct. Like the Elves, the Dwarfs are humanoid enough in appearance and biological makeup to be able to procreate with Humans. Still, we know very little about the Dwarfs other than the fact that they appear to be shorter than Humans and possess unique magical skills and abilities, like Charmy. Owing to the fact that she is half-Human and half-Dwarf, Charmy is able to use two distinct forms of magic – Cotton Magic, and Food Magic.

It is interesting to note that the devil mockingly referred to Asta as a Dwarf because of his short stature. Some fans believe this to mean that Asta is actually a Dwarf or half-Dwarf. However, the devil may have been just mocking him by asking for his height rather than seriously calling him a Dwarf. So, we must keep one thing in mind: As far as we know so far, Astais Human – albeit a rare one – born without any magical powers.

Personally, I can’t wait to learn more about the Dwarfs in the future.

05: SPIRITS

Finally, we have the Spirits – extremely rare creatures summoned to increase the power of Elemental Magic. Actually, it would be wrong to call the Spirits a “race,” but because they are such unique creatures in the Black Clover story, I still want to include them.

So far, we’ve been introduced to just two Spirits, Sylph, the Wind Spirit, and Salamander, the Fire Spirit. It’s possible that there is a Spirit for every type of magic, including Water, Earth, and so on. However, we are yet to meet such Spirits.

What we do know is that Spirits are highly intelligent and powerful. Their powers and personalities evolve along with the user they’re attached to. We encountered the Wind Spirit, Sylph, in a dungeon. She appears to have been summoned by powerful ancient magic, and has since grown very attached to Yuno. She also appears to have a romantic crush on him.

We also encountered the Fire Spirit, Salamander, first used by Fana the Elf. However, control of this Spirit is later transferred to Fuegoleon Vermillion. Unlike sylph, who has the appearance of a humanoid Fairy or Pixie, Salamander has the appearance of an orange lizard. As he becomes more powerful, Salamander can turn into a huge winged dragon, big enough to carry passengers on his back.

Personally, I am very curious to see how many more Spirits will emerge in the Black Clover story, and what their unique powers and appearances will be.

In Conclusion

So, these are all the races, species, and black Lords we know of in Black Clover so far, and while our knowledge of other races and species is limited, aside from Humans and Elves, we do know that Humans, Elves, and Dwarfs share a similar appearance and biological makeup that allows them to reproduce together. This could hint towards a potential encounter with some more interesting hybrid creatures – creatures like the amazing Charmy Papittoson.

What do you guys think? What is your favorite race or species in Black Clover so far? Do you prefer the Humans, Elves, Demons, Dwarves, or Spirits? Do you have any suspicions as to what other races might be introduced in Black Clover in the future? Do you envision the likes of Orcs, Faeries, or Otakus? Let me know down in the comment box!
